The Mazda 2 that was the second car, appraised like the first.

Plenty of the Mazda 2 Hybrids we hear about are the second car in the house. It did the short trips, sat on the drive most of the week, and now the household is going down to one car.

We buy it on the same terms as anything else. Appraised at your home or work, a firm offer at the car, paid by bank transfer the same day.

Down to one car

A second car sells differently, and it is usually easier

Low kilometres, a short history and a very clear reason for selling. Three things that make this one of the simpler sales we do.

The second car in a household has a particular life. It is driven to the station and back, to the shops, to a parent on a Sunday. It is serviced when somebody remembers. It spends most of its week parked. Then something changes, a job moves, somebody starts working from home, the family needs a bigger car, and the household decides it only needs one. The small hybrid is the one that goes.

That history is easy to appraise, and it is mostly good news for the seller. Short trips and low kilometres leave a car that looks and feels young for its age. What we check is the thing short trips do not show, which is whether the car was looked after between them. The service record, the tyres, the battery that sat while the car sat. None of it is a verdict. It is where the time goes on the day.

One more thing a second car often brings: the registration is in a different name from the person who is selling it. Say whose name it is in before we come out, because that is who signs. Then we come to you, appraise the car in front of you, make a firm offer at the car and pay by bank transfer the same day, with the paperwork signed on a phone.

On the call

Five things we ask about a second car

None of these has a wrong answer. They tell us what sort of week the car had.

Who mostly drove it?
One driver for years, or whoever needed it that day. It tells us what sort of wear to expect and whose name is likely to be on the paperwork, and neither counts against the car.
How far did it go in a normal week?
The station and back, or the odd long trip. Low kilometres are good news and we treat them as such. What we look at harder on a car that sat is what happened in between, which is the service record and the tyres.
Has it been serviced on time, roughly?
Yes, no, or not sure. A car that did short trips is easy to forget about, and that is not held against anyone. If the book is in the car, leave it there for the visit.
Is it on finance, or was it paid for outright?
Either is fine. A loan or a novated lease is settled directly with whoever is owed, and if more is owing than the car is worth you hear the shortfall from us in writing before you sign.
Why is it going?
Not a test. Going down to one car, a bigger car on the way, somebody moving away. The reason tells us how quickly you need this done, and we plan the visit and the payment around that.

Whatever the week looked like

Three things that hold on a second car

  • Low kilometres are taken at face value. A car that did the short trips is appraised as that car. Nobody here assumes a story the odometer does not tell.
  • The name on the paper is sorted on the phone. Whoever signs, we know before the visit. One trip, one signature, the paperwork on a phone.
  • The payment is the same day. Firm offer at the car, finance settled directly if there is any, and the balance paid by bank transfer before the day is out.

Before the call

Three questions from people selling the second car

It has barely done any kilometres. Does that help?

Yes, and we say so rather than looking for a reason not to. Low kilometres on a small car are good news. The one thing we look at more closely on a car that sat a lot is whether it was serviced in between, and the book answers that.

The car is registered to my partner. Can I still sell it?

The person on the registration paper signs, so tell us that before we come out and we arrange the visit for a time they can be there, or sort out what else is needed on the call. Nothing about the appraisal or the offer changes.

Do you buy small hybrids or only the big ones?

Both. The size of the car does not change the way it is bought. It is appraised at your home or work, there is a firm offer at the car, and it is paid by bank transfer the same day, exactly as a large one is.

Tell us about the second car. We come to you, appraise it and pay the same day.
