Your first time selling a car, and it is a Crosstrek.
Plenty of the people who sell us a Crosstrek have never sold a car before. They bought it new, kept it, and now it has to go, and nobody has explained what actually happens.
So here it is, from your side. You tell us about the car, we call, we come to you, we make a firm offer at the car and we pay by bank transfer the same day.
- We buy hybrids
- Australia wide
- Finance settled directly

What actually happens
Selling a car for the first time is mostly knowing what to have ready
There are a handful of things to find before the visit, and none of them is hard. This is the list.
The registration paper, or the renewal notice, so we know whose name the car is in. Your driver licence, because that name has to match. The service book if there is one, in the car where the person who comes out can open it. Both keys. And if there is money owing on the car, the name of the financier and roughly what is left, because we ask them for the payout figure and pay it directly.
Then the visit, which is shorter than people expect. The inspector looks at the whole car in front of you, the body, the tyres, the interior, the service record, the hybrid system, and asks about anything they want to understand. There is nothing to prepare for and nothing to perform. At the end there is a firm offer, at the car, in plain figures, and you can say no to it.
If you say yes, the contract of sale and the transfer paperwork are signed on your phone, there and then. Any finance is paid directly to the financier, and if the payout is more than the car is worth you will already have seen that shortfall in writing before this point. The balance is paid to you by bank transfer the same day, the car goes, and the only thing left for you to do is tell your insurer.
Before the visit
Five things we ask a first time seller
Nothing here needs a car person to answer. If you are not sure, say so.
- Whose name is the car registered in?
- Yours, a parent, a partner. Whoever it is signs the contract, so tell us before the visit and we book it for a time they can be there. If you are not sure, read the registration paper to us on the call.
- Is there a loan on it, and with whom?
- Many first cars are. We ask the financier for the payout figure and pay it directly, and you hear the number in writing before anything is signed. You never have to find the money first.
- Do you have both keys and the service book?
- Find them before the visit rather than during it. A missing key or an unstamped book is not a problem, it is a thing to say on the call so it is in the figure from the start.
- Has anything been fitted, repaired or replaced?
- A tow bar, a roof rack, a windscreen, a bumper after a car park bump. Tell us what you remember. It tells the inspector what to look at and nobody expects a perfect memory.
- When do you need this done by?
- Moving house, a new car arriving, a lease ending. Tell us the date and we plan the visit and the payment around it. Most of the time it is one visit and the money is there the same day.
First time or tenth
Three things that hold when you have never done this before
- You can say no at the offer. Nothing binds you until the contract is signed on your phone, and that happens at the end, after the offer, not before.
- The paperwork is ours to handle. Contract of sale, transfer forms, the payout to the financier. You read, you sign on your phone, and we do the rest.
- The money arrives the same day. By bank transfer, the same day the contract is signed, to the account of the person on the paperwork.
Before the call
Three questions from first time sellers
I have never sold a car. Will I get taken advantage of?
The offer is made at the car in plain figures and you can say no to it. Nothing is signed until you have read it on your phone, and anything owing is shown to you in writing before that. Take your time with it.
What do I need to have ready?
The registration paper, your licence, both keys, the service book if you have it, and the name of the financier if there is a loan. That is the whole list. If something is missing, say so and we work around it.
How long does the visit take?
Shorter than most people expect. The inspector looks at the whole car in front of you, asks what they need to, and makes the offer at the car. If you accept, the paperwork is signed on your phone and the payment is made the same day.
